Unusual uses for Coffee Filters!
I got an email the other day with these unusual tips for using coffee filters. Hope you like them as much as I do!
1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave to prevent spatters. Coffee filters make excellent covers.
2. Clean windows and mirrors. Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.
3. Protect China . Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish to prevent scratches.
4. Filter broken cork from wine. If you break the cork when opening a wine bottle, filter the wine through a coffee filter.
5. Protect a cast-iron skillet. Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
6. Apply shoe polish. Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.
7. Recycle frying oil. After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.
8. Weigh chopped foods. Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a kitchen scale.
9. Hold tacos. Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.
10. Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot. Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
11. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping. Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.
12. Do you think we used expensive strips to wax eyebrows? Use strips of coffee filters.
13. Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them. Soaks out all the grease.
14. Keep in the bathroom. They make great "razor nick fixers."

Christmas?? It's July!
I know, I know, who wants to think about Christmas in July??? The truth is, not many of us! But, if you want to reduce the stress and save your budget this year, July is truly the perfect time to start on Christmas! Planning ahead will reduce the temptation and frustration of overspending in December. Here are some ideas and tips to get you started.
1. Make a list! Start by writing down who you want to get gifts for this year.
2. Divide the number of names on your list by the number of payperiods you have until Thanksgiving.
3. Decide your limit on how much you want to spend for each gift and STICK TO IT!
4. Purchase/make those gifts using ONLY the amount you have delegated for them each payday, then WRITE what you've bought and where you've put it by the name on the list!!!!
5. When buying online, try to combine your order. You'll save on shipping if you buy several things at a time and have them shipped together!
Tips: Get creative! Think "couples, or family" gifts. You can often pare down your list by making/purchasing 1 gift that is suitable for the entire family, saving yourself a heap of time and money! How about a Movie Night Themed Gift. Purchase a video, suitable for the couple/family on your list, or give them a gift certificate from a video rental store. Add some packets of microwave popcorn, a couple boxes of "movie theater" style candy from the dollar stores, wrap it all up in a cute basket or box and VOILA, a family gift!

Ants and Bears, oh my!
Spring has sprung, evidenced by the ants and bears re-emerging from their winter slumbers.
Here are a couple good tips to keep these critters under control.
To get rid of ants, mix equal parts borax and powdered sugar together. Sprinkle the mixture along their ant trails. Within a few days, you should see fewer ants.
As for our bruin friends, keep them out of your garbage by dousing a paper towel with some household ammonia. (hold your breath, it will make your eyes water!) Lay this towel on top of your garbage, then tie the bag shut and place in your dumpster. Bears do not like the smell of ammonia any more than we do! This method has proved successful with even our stubborn neighborhood cinnamon black bear. He's fearless when it comes to noise, lights, dogs, etc. Since we implemented the ammonia, he's decided our trash is no longer on his menu. Better for us, better for him.

Q: What Ingredients are used in your cleaners and why?
A: The following are used in our Green Cleaning Products:
1. Distilled White Vinegar White distilled vinegar is a popular household cleanser, effective for killing most mold, bacteria, and germs, due to its level of acidity. Cleaning with white distilled vinegar is a smart way to avoid using harsh chemicals. You’ll also be glad to know that it is environmentally friendly and very economical.
2. Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate ) A box of baking soda is one of the most useful things you can have in your arsenal of cleaners. More effective than many commercially-produced cleaners, it's also non-toxic and inexpensive. Use it on everything from your bathtub to your laundry.
3. Washing Soda ARM & HAMMER Super Washing Soda is 100% sodium carbonate and it is used as a laundry booster and general household cleaner. (ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda is 100% sodium bicarbonate and has a myriad of household cleaning, personal care, and deodorizing uses, as well as being a leavening agent. IT is important to note that these two are two distinctly different products and CANNOT be substituted for one another.) Super Washing Soda is all natural. It will work well with and is safe for any septic system. Precautions: Not to be ingested, large doses may be fatal. May cause irritation if exposed to the skin, eyes, or if inhaled. Handle with caution, and keep away from children and pets.
4. Borax (Sodium borate) is a natural mineral which is widely used in the cosmetic industry.
Since it is also utilized as a detergent, many people are shocked to learn that it is also a main ingredient in their favorite brand of bath salt! Borax naturally occurs from the repeated evaporation of seasonal lakes. The largest deposits of this mineral may be found in California, the American southwest, Chile, and Tibet. Borax is a very popular ingredient, simply because of its many varied applications, and its ease of use. Precautions: Not to be ingested, large doses may be fatal. May cause irritation if exposed to the skin, eyes, or if inhaled. Handle with caution, and keep away from children and pets.
5. Pure Castile Bar Soap is completely biodegradable. We use Kirk's. All surfactants used in Kirk's are biodegradable. This means all surfactants (sudsing/cleaning agents) are broken down into simpler compounds by natural biological action helping to eliminate sudsing/foaming problems in lakes and streams. What are the health effects of Kirk's soap? Eye: The product is mild enough that no damage or irritation should occur. In the event that irritation does occur, warm water poured over the bridge of the nose for a couple of minutes should be enough. If symptoms persist, a doctor should be consulted. Ingestion: The product is not poisonous. If a large quantity is ingested, it may cause vomiting. In the occasion that this happens, dilute it
with fluids, such as milk, water, or juice. Skin: The product contains no irritations or allergens. An adverse reaction, while unusual is most likely due to individual allergies.
6. Liquid Castile Soap, same as above.
7. Rubbing Alcohol It is used as a disinfectant to get rid of most surface germs. Rubbing alcohol is known as isopropyl alcohol (C 3H 8O); it is one of the more useful of the commercial alcohols, included in hand lotions and many cosmetic items as well as in antifreeze or deicer products. A 70 percent solution has more germicidal properties than does ETHANOL (drinking alcohol), so it is used in many health-care situations, both in households and in medical facilities
8. Liquid Vegetable Glycerin-used as a preservative
9. Essential Oils Although these oils are considered the safest essential oils, you should discontinue use if you have any allergic reactions. Keep away from children and pets.
Tea Tree Oil Clinical studies have documented the value of Tea Tree oil, which date back to the original work conducted in 1923 by Dr. A. R. Penfold, an Australian government chemist. He found that Tea Tree leaves contained an essential oil, which showed antiseptic and bacterial properties 13 times stronger than carbolic acid, the accepted standard of the time. In 1930, Mr. E. M. Humphrey published an article entitled "A New Australian Germicide." He identified that Tea Tree oil's disinfectant action on the typhoid bacilli was sixty times greater than that of ordinary hand soap. So important was Tea Tree in 1940's that it was standard issue in first aid kits for army and navy personnel. Tea Tree oil turns out to be one of the most useful of all essential oils, especially as an antiseptic. Tea tree oil is actually 12 times stronger than phenol, a common ingredient in many cleaners. The antiseptic, germicidal, antifungal, antibacterial immune-boosting qualities of Tea Tree oil make it applicable to a wide range of health conditions. In addition, the antiseptic benefits of the oil allow its use as a natural cleaner and disinfectant within the household environment. When using, note the scent will dissipate within a few days.
Lavender Oil Because lavender has antiseptic properties it makes a great household disinfectant It also is known for it's calming, soothing properties. So, if you have to clean, might as well make it a peaceful experience!
Orange and Tangerine Oil Have antiseptic properties and when added to furniture polish, helps to protect against damage from insects.

Q: What's up with those "Green Cleaning" products you offer?
A: We thought you'd never ask!
Even though I've been making and using most of these cleaners for years for use in our own home, I got really serious about it when our grown daughter somehow got a staph infection on her arm! (She's in and out of the ER for work every day). She went to urgent care where they put her on some powerful antibiotics and did a culture to see if it was MRSA, (you know, those bacteria that are resistant to most antibiotics and are becoming rampant in our hospitals and environment?) So, I started researching this and found that the many of the cleaning and personal products offered to consumers can actually do more harm than good! Not only were the antibacterial products creating resistant cooties, but they are also bad for our bodies and immune systems, as well as the environment! I set out to create some natural household cleaners that contained ingredients that research has shown to be effective in killing off many of these nasty "superbugs" and are not harmful to our bodies, or the environment. My daughter is doing much better, now. And she's now started using these products in her own home. Thankfully, it wasn't MRSA... this time. Scary, though.

Not only were the antibacterial products creating resistant cooties, but they are also bad for our bodies and immune systems, as well as the environment! I set out to create some natural household cleaners that contained ingredients that research has shown to be effective in killing off many of these nasty "superbugs" and are not harmful to our bodies, or the environment. My daughter is doing much better, now. And she's now started using these products in her own home. Thankfully, it wasn't MRSA... this time. Scary, though.
